Oklahoma Native American Basketweavers

Debra Laws                                         Cherokee Nation

I learned to weave my first cherokee double wall basket in January of 1995. Since then I have learned twills and have reproduced a few twill baskets from pictures. I also weave antler baskets. I weave traditional baskets but love to experiment and do comtemporary baskets.

In 1997, I entered the Haskell Indian Art Market in Lawrence, Kansas. In 1999 I entered the Kansas City Indian Market in Overland Park and Sept. 1999 I was at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, Kansas. I entered four baskets to be juried in The University of Kansas Museum of Anthropology and received an Honorable Mention ribbon for one of my recreated cherokee baskets, the exibit was from Oct. 14th through October 20th, 2002. I also was in the Haskell Indian Art Market in Sept. 2002.
